Subcontractor insurance requirements checklist builder

Answer five questions and get a plain checklist of insurance to ask a subcontractor for, ready to copy into an email or contract exhibit. Nothing leaves your device.

These are common starting points used in many small construction contracts, not legal requirements. Your contract, your client and your insurance agent decide the final numbers.

How to use this checklist

  • Match your own contract first. If your client requires $2M per occurrence from you, ask your subs for at least the same.
  • Ask for endorsements, not just boxes. A checked "ADDL INSD" box on a certificate doesn't add you to the policy by itself.
  • Check workers' comp rules in your state. Some states let owner-operators opt out with an official form; others don't.
  • Get the certificate before the first day on site, and track every expiration date (try our free COI expiration checker, or upload one to our COI reader).

Check your subs' certificates against this list

Send us your minimums and your subs' certificates. COI chasing ($49/month) compares each certificate's coverage types and limits to your requirements, flags anything missing, below minimum or expired, and requests renewals from the agent. Endorsement forms and contract wording still need your own or your agent's review.
